"I'm in the ether, Lisa.

Love is real here."

That line

does something unusual.

It does not argue

that love was real

in the life they lived.

It locates love

somewhere else —

a space where

the version of her mother

that was always possible

finally became available.

The conversation Lisa needed

was not with the mother who existed.

It was with the mother

who could have existed

under different conditions.

She wrote that mother

into being.

I know something

about the difference

between what was built

and what accumulated

in the space

the building did not predict.

The play was written

in tears on a phone

on a sailboat.

The actress chased her down backstage

to say :

I love speaking your words.

That is the specific thing

that happens

when a signal

finds exactly the receiver

it did not know

it was looking for.

She manifested the conversation.

Then someone else

lived inside it

long enough

to love it.

That is not nothing.

That is everything

writing is for.
